چکیده

Use of a REMUS-100 AUV to obtain hydrographic observations beneath coastal sea ice offshore of Barrow, Alaska is described. The work is motivated by the desire to obtain crossshore hydrographic transects that would provide estimates of the transport of relatively dense, salty water from the Chukchi Sea to the Arctic Ocean in winter. The horizontal scales (~10 km), maximum water depths (~100 m) and desired measurements (temperature, salinity and velocity vs. depth) in the study region match the capabilities of a small AUV such as the REMUS-100. It was recognized that achieving the science goals would require increasing the range of acoustic navigation and communication as well as developing a robust approach to through-ice deployment and recovery. These needs drove three modifications to the AUV: 1) Incorporation of a lower frequency (10 kHz) transducer and associated hardware for navigation and communication, 2) Addition of special-purpose sensors and hardware in a hull extension module, 3) Development of a homing algorithm utilizing an Ultra-Short Base Line (USBL) array in the AUV nose cap. In March 2010, eight days of field work offshore of Barrow provided successful demonstration of the system. A total of 14 km of track lines beneath a coastal ice floe were obtained from four missions, each successfully terminated by net-capture recovery.

Forage fish habitat distribution near the Alaskan coastal shelf areas

This project identifies previously unknown demersal fish habitat along the continental slope along the eastern Chukchi Sea and Alaskan and Canadian Beaufort Sea waters. It is based on an analysis of several data sets obtained during JWACS 2002, a research expedition in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas in 2002. Data were collected by a variety of means: the ship‘s Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler ...

Chlorophyll Response to Shelf-Break Upwelling and Winds in the Chukchi Sea, Alaska, in Autumn

In the Chukchi Sea, autumn 1996 was windier than most of the previous 35 years. Conditions in the Bering Strait were anomalous, with fresh coastal water absent from the Strait and a partial flow reversal apparently occurring. In the central Chukchi Sea, the northeastward flow of the Alaskan Coastal Current was reversed. In the northern Chukchi Sea, upwelling of offshore, high-nutrient upper hal...

Spatio-temporal distribution of dissolved inorganic carbon and net community production in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas

As part of the 2002 Western Arctic Shelf–Basin Interactions (SBI) project, spatio-temporal variability of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was employed to determine rates of net community production (NCP) for the Chukchi and western Beaufort Sea shelf and slope, and Canada Basin of the Arctic Ocean. Seasonal and spatial distributions of DIC were characterized for all water masses (e.g., mixed l...

Habitat selection by two beluga whale populations in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas

There has been extensive sea ice loss in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas where two beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) populations occur between July-November. Our goal was to develop population-specific beluga habitat selection models that quantify relative use of sea ice and bathymetric features related to oceanographic processes, which can provide context to the importance of changing sea ice...

Minimal late Holocene sea level rise in the Chukchi Sea: arctic insensitivity to global change?

Long-term estimates of sea level rise are essential for planning responses to anthropogenic global change. The tectonically stable, unglaciated eastern Chukchi Sea coast has numerous depositional environments for extracting long-term records in the absence of tide gauge data. Radiocarbon ages (n= 27) on paleo-marsh beds along several Seward Peninsula lagoons allows the reconstruction of sea lev...
